Accelerated Reader
This is a school reading program led by the librarian Mrs. Douglass. It is an incentive
program for students who participate
in this reading program, as well as updating books and
computerized tests. Students read books from an age appropriate
list and take computerized comprehension tests.

After School Care
Both the School and the PTSA coordinate/enable after school activities for students.
Some of the on-site programs are the
YMCA,
Choir (grades 3-5), CYT@School
and Guitar Lessons. Additionally, KinderCare & Kids Club have shuttle service that stops at Chinook.

Art Fundraiser
Original Works is a school fundraising program that offers a way to use kids' artwork and turn it into fundraising products for parents, grandparents & friends to purchase.
Need:Help send out flyers, collect orders,
and distribute the filled orders at the school. Typically, one sale per year.

Auctions
Our PTSA auction is one of the largest fund raisers of the year. This is a wonderful short term
volunteer commitment opportunity. Need:
Volunteers are needed to assist with logistics and coordination of the auction event(s), including marketing, logistics, facilities,
and decorations. Additional roles during the events also include: raffle ticket distribution,
auction table promotions, set-up, and (one of the most important) auction check-out.

Book Fair
Would you love to put affordable
books into the hands of our Chinook students? This committee
does just that by organizing and running our fall Scholastic
Book Fair. Need:
Committee members work with our Scholastic representative, organize book
buying opportunities and organize volunteer schedules to work at events as well as
support the Spring BOGO Book Fair.

Box Tops
Campbell’s Labels for Education™,
General Mill’s Box Tops for Education and Tyson A+ project award free educational
merchandise or cash grants to schools. Chinook
PTSA participates by having our families clip and send to school UPC
codes or box tops from eligible products to turn into these programs for redemption.
Need: Coordination of the collection
process for these programs, as well as the submission to the programs for
redemption. Volunteers are also needed for “at home” trimming of labels
when needed.

Carnival
The Chinook PTSA carnival is the largest public school carnival in Vancouver. All are welcome.
Typically, there are numerous bounce houses, miniture golf, cake walk, cake decoration
contest, bake sale, games, crafts, and the silent auction. Need:Coordination of
the volunteers, setup, tear down, food preparation, corporate sponsors. Works closely with
several other committees, such as volunteer coordination, donations, spirit wear, etc. The more
involved with this event, the better.

Chinook Cleanup Day
Can you spare a morning to
help spruce up our school? Show your pride in Chinook by joining us
for a weed-pulling party! It will be wonderful to have our school look
great when our students arrive on the first day of school. This committee will
pick up trash, weed our flower beds and lay down new mulch. Need: Any
and all helping hands!

Cocoa & Sharing / Food & Gift Drive
The PTSA adopts several Chinook families in need.
The gifts are then
wrapped by volunteers on a special evenning, just prior to the choir concert. Cocoa and treats are
provided to the volunteers. This is a great family event to help others and to also teach your
child the importance of giving. Additionally, we collect canned and boxed food for donation. This
committee is a great opportunity to show the holiday spirit. PTSA also holds the gift drive encouraging
families to help fill the needs/wishes of the less fortunate. Need:
A chairperson is needed to coordinate supplies, volunteers, communication needs.
Volunteers are needed to help wrap gifts and clean up.

Donations
Donations are vital to the PTSA’s ability
to raise funds to support our various programs and activities.
We have found it extremely helpful to have a Donations
Committee to solicit donations in partnership with local
businesses. This committee solicits and obtains donations for various PTSA events
(typically food or supplies) and also assists with the auction related events. This is a really fun
committee; it's like getting presents all year long! Need:
Volunteers are needed to send emails, letters and visit businesses to obtain
donations and help with pick up & delivery of donations.

Fifth Grade Promotion
Graduation from the fifth grade is an important life milestone in your student's life. The committee puts together the following year end
events: Pick a theme, coordinate a year end party with food and activities (typically catered & carnival vendor),
organize fundraisers (movie night; dinner out evenings), order signature shirts, create photo DVD, raise funds for donation/grant to the school & charity,
possibly service project, etc. Need: lots of various roles.

First Day Coffee
Back-to-school also means the first day school and welcoming both Students and Parents to the
new school year at Chinook. This is a great opportunity to have coffee and tea with some of the
families and our Principal in an informal setting. This is a great short term commitment.
Need: Coordinate coffee and a snack, set up and
clean-up.

First Day Folders
Back-to-school also means back-to-important-paperwork. Need:
Volunteers are needed for a few
hours to help assemble packets of important information for
Chinook families for the first day of school.

First Day Transportation
This is a wonderful short term commitment committee that helps set the tone for
our students. Help students get off and on their buses and to and for their classrooms
the first day. Assist the kindergarteners the first week Need:
Volunteers are needed for a few hours before and after school the first week of school.

Family Arts Night
A fun filled family night that focuses on exciting enrichment activities and
projects appropriate for each grade level. During the evening your students will
enjoy creating "make & take" art projects that can involve the whole family.
Need: Volunteers to help with art projects, set up, clean up and food service.
No art experience necessary, just lend a hand!

Family Movie Nights
Family Movie Night is one of the fun events for kids of all ages. An age appropriate movie is shown, pop corn
is eaten, the extended family of Chinook PTSA has some quality time. Pizza is available for sale by the slice or as a whole pizza, so please
come and enjoy dinner & a show.
Need: Selection of appropriate movie to recommend to PTSA Board, set up, Pizza sales & minor concession stand staffing,
clean up.

Ice Cream Social
The PTSA sponsors a Back-to-School Ice
Cream Social where students can learn their teacher assignments,
pay into their lunch accounts and check out their new
class while enjoying some ice cream. Parents get an opportunity to
mingle with other parents, join the PTSA and/or sign-up to be a
volunteer. Need: The Ice Cream Social is the first PTSA sponsored
event of the year. Coordinate the ice cream donation, volunteers, setup activities.
It’s also a great opportunity to
get involved and get to know people.

K-2 Bear Reading Night
This is an event put on by our teachers. It coincides with the book fair. Kindergarten though Second Grade: This is a great evenning where students wear pajamas to school,
bring their teddy bears, or other suffed animal and enjoy an evenning of reading. Local authors
may come to read their children books and Mr. Lapidus is even known to bring out his guitar.
This event overlaps the book fair, so please come prepared to support reading both with your efforts
and by picking up a book or three to take home.

Membership
A PTSA is only as good as its
membership, and can’t be truly successful without the
contributions and efforts of many. If you believe in PTSA and would like to
help us celebrate the goods things PTSA does to improve Chinook Elementary,
as well as educate our membership on opportunities
to get involved, then join our membership committee. Need: The chair
of this committee will be a member of the Chinook PSTA Board of Directors and
will assist with keeping our membership records current with the WA State
PTSA Office via online services. The committee will assist in building relationships
with new and existing members at PTSA sponsored events to improve
the strength of our PTSA.

Newsletter
The PTSA provides a quarterly
newsletter, separate from the school newsletter. This
newsletter is aimed at keeping parents & PTSA members
informed as to what is happening with PTSA supported activities.
Need: A Designer (chairperson) is needed to help with the layout and production
of the newsletter. Assistance is also needed to gather information
for the newsletter and production of the newsletter quarterly.

Payback Books
Another big fundraiser for Chinook PTSA
is selling Payback Coupon Books, featuring hundreds of
discounts to local Vancouver restaurants and retailers. This
fundraising committee will organize a “take home” sale in
September. Need: A chairperson to coordinate organizing this
fundraiser with the assistance of volunteers to collect, tally and
distribute orders back to students.

Picture Day, Vision & Hearing
It is harder to learn if you can’t see or hear
well. This important committee helps screen our kids for adequate vision
and hearing and to just keep it interesting, we also through in Picture Day.
Need: Volunteer to assist the school nurse on two
separate testing days. Volunteer for one or both days.

PTSA Board
The board is responsibility for oversight of the various events and financial matters of the
PTSA. In addition to the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary, committee chairs are also
part of the board.

PTSA Board Nominations
This committee helps shape the PTSA for the future by talking to parents and teachers to identify potential future officers of the Chinook PTSA. Members of this committee will be discussing the merits and responsibilities of leadership with individuals interested in serving as PTSA officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Committee work includes holding confidential meetings, reviewing nominations, and searching for the best qualified candidates.
The Nominating Committee is elected at the winter General Membership Meeting. Members of the committee are also eligible for nomination to an office. Email for Information

Read N' Lead
This is a wonderful multi-month long reading program that encourages students to read on a
daily basis. Total minutes are accumulated at the classroom level and there are monthly prices
available if reading milestones are met. Need: Coordinate and facilitate the volunteer readers,
track student and classroom results.

Reflections Cultural Arts Competition
Each year, Reflections (national PTA competition) challenges students to create original art that supports
a specific theme in any of six arts areas: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and
Choreography/Dance.
Need:
Volunteers will promote & market the Reflections Program (bulletin board, backpack mail,
PTSA Newsletter article,
and Chinook Facebook page).
Organize and hold a Reflections Workshop where PTSA provides supplies to create, mat, and
complete Visual Arts and Literature entries.
Collect and assure that all entries meet program rules, including judging and submission to
PTA Council Level by the due date.
Organize a recognition / awards presentation for all participants as part of the last-day all-school
assembly.

Snuggle Up & Read with Dad
This is a great opportunity for fathers and role models from throughout our community
to encourage our children to read. We want to get our students excited
about reading! It is structured as quality time for our
students and their dads and is extremely popular!
Need:
Coordinate the volunteer role models (substitute dads), select reading room topics,
pull books from the library, coordinate end of the event snack,

Spring Plants
The plants offered through this fundraiser are reasonably priced and of high quality.
On Delivery, the plants are delivered to the school and parents come and receive their plants after school. This
Committee then coordinate distributing the plants that afternoon. Need: This committee will
coordinate distributing the order forms and later compiling the results into the master order for the nursery.

Spring Dance Night
This is a fun filled event of music, dance, and food for our families. Need: Arrange for music and
karaoke, setup, order pizza/food, and cleanup.

Staff Appreciation
This committees provides healthy snacks, treats and surprises during heavy activity weeks
for teachers and staff (such as WASL, report cards, teacher appreciation week).
Need: Coordination of the various activities and volunteers.

Talent Show
This event is where our students can perform acting, singing, dancing, acrobatics, drumming,
martial arts and other activities to showcase their talents. Any and all age appropriate
performances are welcome. Come show off those skills and talents!
Need: The PTSA Volunteers works with the FAB teachers.
Volunteers print and distributes information/ permission / audition slip to all students,
assists with auditions, and the evenings of the talent show. Promotes Talent Show through PTSA
News, morning announcements, back pack fliers and via Chinook Facebook page. Coordinate event
snack sales and cleanup.

TV Turnoff Week
The PTSA assists teachers and parents during national
TV Turnoff Week with games and activities for the whole family.
One of the evenings the PTSA offers a pizza feed for dinner. Certificates and prizes are
awarded to students who complete the week without TV. Need:
Coordinate prizes, activities and volunteers, setup, food service and cleanup.

Volunteers are at the core of any
PTSA sponsored activity. If you can be available to make calls

Wolf Pup Spirit Wear
School spirit is an important part of the
Chinook school community. The PTSA supports the sale of T-shirts and
other Wolf Pup logo items. Need: Coordinate the annual purchase of spirit wear and sales
activity and a
few helpful volunteers to help tally, sort and deliver orders.
